Sunday half marathon distance.

I’d planned on doing this distance in November, building up a mile at a time each weekend until I was there.

But then I woke up today, felt good, strong and my compression tights fit just that bit better than last time… they’ve grown.. or I’ve shrunk?

So I went for it. Got the dog ready, yup she ran the whole way with me, she set a great pace for most of it.

Ate my energy balls every 30mins and tried my best to drink the 2 litres of water in my camelbak, didn’t quite finish it.

Beautiful weather, not too cold, and I was totally comfortable in my gear until mile 9 I think then the T-shirt I had on was rubbing against the base layers on my nipples.😱

The base layer is more comfortable on its own than the T-shirt so off it went… it was that or end up bleeding from the nipples… which isn’t a good look.

I must have looked “interesting” tights, vest base layer, arm warmers, hat, backpack and dog… but I was comfy and that’s all I cared about, we had some quick segments and got to say “Hello” to hundreds of people enjoying the canal this morning.

In the age of masks 😷 smiling and saying hi to people should be enjoyed.

Anyway, the last few miles were properly tough, pain in my hip flexor meant I had to stop to stretch every 5 mins or so and then the last few hundred meters after I’d hit the distance…. running on empty, even I’m the dog wasn’t gonna help me then.

This afternoon, I’ve bathed, stretched, eat and slept and feeling good. Next long run… 15miles? Or 25km?

Same route as 3 days ago, but a world of difference, it was cold but dry and bright,

The gravel bike fully loaded feels great until your into the wind then i really noticed the loss of aerodynamics but after an hour it just felt normal.

This is training for coast to coast ride later in October, so gonna be riding a loaded bike for the next few weeks.

But today… I just didn’t want to stop, I could have kept riding all day.

Muddy legged morning ride

After an easier week it’s time to get the hammer down again.

Mountain bike ride, along the canal it was a beautiful sunrise, the air smelt like autumn, there’s the cool crisp slightly damp feel, but it’s fresh and I can push push push for longer before I start to get too hot.

I love to train in the autumn it’s just so beautiful, in a few weeks time the leaves will change and start to fall and colours will explode.

For now it was a ride out in the dark, lights on, push for 55mins and snack turn around and go back.

I had a rabbit (faster cyclist) to chase for most of the return journey which kept the pace up, then I attacked the last strava segment. I’m 23 seconds off the KOM here but only 10 seconds off the top 10, so next time I won’t go as hard at the bottom and blow up near the top… good fun though.

Run swim run

The run to the gym felt good this morning, stretching the legs out and enjoying the scenery. I live in a lovely part of Leeds with an ancient abbey, canals, woods, it’s all very green and lovely at the moment.

Got to the gym and had to do lengths of the car park to make it up to 5km so I picked my knees up and was hitting a high pace for the last 800m in 100m sprints.

Fastest time on this garmin so yey! I think my PB for a 5k is 28mins but that was like 10 years + ago and I didn’t get to social media post it so who know, let’s go with the current data and that says today’s was quick for me.

Swim was harder work as I did the session without the float between the legs, mostly because it won’t fit in the Camelbak Mule backpack… and I need to crack the arms and legs at the same time at some point so why not now… and I did, for like 4 maybe 5 lengths in the middle of the session it all worked, smooth, felt fast, wasn’t gasping for air. So now I know what I’m after, that smooth, slow, fast feeling.

Run back along the canal was harder than the run in but again there was a few minutes in there when it felt so smooth and easy, in the running zone and just moving.
